Comprehensive Shoulder Care from a Fellowship-Trained Specialist
Dr. Christopher Dillingham is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and fellowship-trained shoulder specialist serving patients throughout Sarasota, Florida and the surrounding communities. Whether you are dealing with a sports injury, chronic shoulder pain, or a condition that requires surgery, Dr. Dillingham provides the full range of diagnostic and treatment options to help you get back to the activities you enjoy.
His fellowship training in Hand, Shoulder, and Arm Surgery at the University of Florida gives him the specialized skill set to treat even the most complex shoulder conditions, from minimally invasive arthroscopic repairs to total and reverse shoulder replacement.
Common Shoulder Conditions We Treat
The shoulder is built for range of motion. That mobility is an asset, but it comes at a cost: the shoulder is also vulnerable to injury, degeneration, and overuse. Pain may develop from a single traumatic event or accumulate gradually over years of activity and age-related change.
Shoulder Arthritis
Severe arthritis in the shoulder can cause persistent pain, stiffness, and loss of motion that interferes with daily life. When conservative treatments are no longer effective, Dr. Dillingham offers total and reverse shoulder replacement to relieve pain and restore mobility.
Rotator Cuff Tears
The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles and tendons that stabilize the shoulder joint. Tears can develop gradually from wear and tear or occur suddenly from an injury. Dr. Dillingham treats partial and complete rotator cuff tears using arthroscopic, minimally invasive techniques designed to restore strength and function while minimizing recovery time.
Labral Tears
The labrum is a ring of cartilage that surrounds the shoulder socket and helps keep the joint stable. Labral tears, including SLAP tears and Bankart lesions, are common in athletes and can cause pain, clicking, and a feeling of instability. Dr. Dillingham repairs labral tears arthroscopically through small incisions.
Shoulder Instability & Dislocations
Recurrent shoulder dislocations or a feeling that the shoulder is slipping out of place can result from a traumatic injury or from naturally loose ligaments. Dr. Dillingham evaluates the cause of instability and offers both non-surgical and arthroscopic surgical options to stabilize the joint.
Shoulder Impingement
Shoulder impingement occurs when the tendons of the rotator cuff become compressed as they pass through the narrow space beneath the shoulder blade. This can cause pain with overhead movements and, over time, lead to inflammation or tearing. Treatment often begins with physical therapy and may include arthroscopic surgery if symptoms persist.
Frozen Shoulder
Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) causes progressive stiffness and pain that can severely limit range of motion. Dr. Dillingham offers conservative management as well as arthroscopic treatment for patients whose symptoms do not improve with time and therapy.
Our Approach to Shoulder Treatment
Dr. Dillingham’s approach starts with an accurate diagnosis and a thorough conversation about your goals. He explores conservative options first, including physical therapy, activity modification, and regenerative treatments such as PRP therapy, before recommending surgery. When a procedure is the right path, he uses the least invasive technique that will produce the best long-term result.
